An Interview with… Dawn Styles

Dawn-Styles-DoTERRATell us a bit about yourself and your career background?

I am a mum of 4 children, all of which are home-educated by myself and my husband. I started my own business as a childminder 10 years ago, when my own children were young, to enable me to still earn whilst being home with them. About a year ago I was introduced to DoTERRA essential oils and it came at a great time for me. I was feeling a bit fed up and needed something new to inspire me. I decided to start learning about essential oils and their benefits to health and wellness, I haven’t looked back!

Tell us about your business?

I started my DoTERRA business in September 2016. I basically educate and empower people to support their own health and wellness using essential oils and supplements. I love it so much, the oils have given me a new lease of life and I just love seeing the change in other people as they start using essential oils.

What inspired you to start your business?

When I realised the power of these therapeutic grade oils I just wanted to help as many people as possible by sharing them. I am passionate about supporting people to feel their best in a natural way.

Tell us about your family?

I have been with my husband for 17 years now, married for 9 years. He is my best friend and soul mate, I am very lucky. We have 4 amazing children aged 15, 12, 11 and 4.

Can you describe a typical day, where you work, what your responsibilities are, timings, are you an early bird or night owl?

I am so not a morning person. We are very rarely up and moving before 10am, even the children love laying in bed! I work from wherever I am on that day, at the dentist, in the car, in the living room, in bed! That is the beauty of running a network marketing business, it fits in around you and your family. I book appointments and then visit people in their homes or we meet up for a coffee somewhere. I run larger classes from my home and stands at many different sized events. It is amazing to me that I get paid from sharing oils and chatting to people about how great essential oils are.

How do you manage your time with work and children?

It is easy to manage when running such a flexible business. I don’t book appointments on the days the children need me, or I have other commitments. My business will grow from the time I can put into it so on the months I am super busy with other things I just do a little less on my business. I still earn while doing less as I am making up for it the following months.

How did you fund your startup?

I didn’t need a lot to start up, just bought a few oils. It was mainly research and educating myself, which costs nothing and is fun.

What tools, resources, advice did you use when starting your business?

I gained advice from my wider team… we have an amazing team! They provide regular training sessions, tons of information and will help every step of the way.

What do find the most rewarding about being a Mumpreneur?

Being flexible enough to work from anywhere and be there for my family when they need me

What do find most difficult about being a Mumpreneur?

There are a few areas I find challenging such as social media and marketing but I know I can just turn to another mumpreneur who is experienced in the area I need help with. If I am not good at it then I pay someone else to do it.

How do you manage running your business and family life? Is there any hints and tips you can offer?

I find it works very well. I have a very supportive family who back me 100% I think your partner has to also believe in you and your vision in order for it to be successful, especially as they will be a big part of helping with the children etc.

Do you have/make any time for yourself? What do you do? Is it important to do this?

Yes it is very important. Some months I do not make time for myself and it’s so easy to burn out. I usually have a massage or go for a run. I also meditate often.

What is the biggest business challenge you encountered in your business and how did you overcome it?

The main challenges I have faced have been personal ones. I had to do a lot of work on mindset and confidence building. I am constantly improving myself which in turn improves the service I can give to others.

What is your biggest achievement in business to date?

I was top enroller of our whole Team in May 2017. I enrolled 10 people over the month, this was over 3 weeks as I was away on holiday for a week!

What have you got planned for your business in the future?

Lots. I am training to be able to offer Reiki treatments, which will complement my oils business and work side by side.

What three bits of advice would you give to a mum wanting to start her own business?

Work on yourself wherever you need it, have a firm plan of where your business is going and know your ‘Why’.

What things do you delegate/outsource to others and why?

Cleaning, gardening, social media, marketing. I just don’t enjoy these things or have the time to do them!

What do you enjoy most about being apart of The Unique Mumpreneur community?

The thing I like most is the support that is available via the group. I am grateful to receive amazing support and new contacts and in return I love supporting others by exploring and sharing the services or products they offer.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

You only have one life to take that leap and follow your dreams.
